Set in 1899 at the outbreak of war between the South African Republic and the British Empire, The Longest March follows Philippa and Nduku as they and seven thousand Zulu mineworkers walk roughly 500 km from Johannesburg back to Natal after the mines shut down and workers are ordered to leave. Along the trek they face harsh terrain, danger, and complex personal and romantic entanglements. The narrative interweaves a vivid human story with real historical events, exploring themes of perseverance, identity, and survival.
